Disliking the Yankees

For as long as I remember, I have disliked the Yankees. I became a staunch Red Sox fan only in the Pedro and Manny era, so Yankeehate was established long before that.

When I was a kid there was only one game a week on television, the Saturday game of the week. About nine times out of ten it was a Yankee game. If I remember correctly, the network that aired the game also owned the Yankees. At that time, I was a Tigers fan and I basically only got to see them play if they had a weekend series with the Yankees. All the kids in my neighborhood were Yankee fans because they saw them frequently. (Remember when everyone was a Braves fan when TBS was the first superstation on cable? Same deal.)

Then I became a Reds fan because our local minor league team became the AAA affiliate for them, and I didn’t care about the AL much at all except when the Reds were in the World Series. The Yankees were laughable in the 1976 series and mostly I remember the chicken arm throwing of Mickey Rivers and how they took an extra base on his arm every time.

I do remember the 1975 series as well. I felt more like the Red Sox were a respected foe and that was probably the genesis of my appreciation for Boston.

Anyway, I’m a Yankee hater from way back and that works well with my Red Sox fandom.
