Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions. (Matthew 19:21–22, NLT)

Reading this always troubles me. I don’t believe Jesus was saying there is a two-tier discipleship plan: perfect and ordinary. I don’t believe it can be spiritualized away. At the same time, I can’t see that it is meant for everyone to sell out all possessions.

It bothers me, it troubles me. It gives me pain and it makes me sad.
