Good Works

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. (Ephesians 2:8–10, NRSV)

This passage is a favorite of many Christians. We like to revel in the wonderful gift we have been given.

But many Christians ignore the last part: we are created for good works. As Klyne Snodgrass puts it, “Salvation is not from works, but it surely is for works, that is, living obediently and productively.”

Becoming a productive Christian is not a higher goal for especially spiritual Christians. It is the norm. If you are not productive, you are looking the gift horse in the mouth.
