02/11/2005 Archived Entry: "Lent"

Maggi Dawn gave up sweets for lent, and two days later is already dwindling away to nothing. She's looking to make a swap bargain with God.

One of the fellows I work with has made the same rule for himself, and in the two days since he has been confronted with delectable cookies one day and Krispy Kremes the next. He has resisted. So far.

It is not my custom to give up things for Lent, although I don't think it's wrong. What I do think is wrong is to go wild on fat Tuesday (Mardi gras) in anticipation of forty days of deprivation. I don't do either.

I actually got into an argument regarding Lent recently. Someone was saying that it was purely secular in nature, that it was merely a purification by deprivation. I, however, held fast to the point that it was an emulation of Jesus's forty days spent fasting in the wilderness.

On a tangent, I think if you're going to give up something for Lent, you should quit being a wimp and fast for forty days. *Sticks a piece of bacon in his mouth* Let's see what I gave up for Lent this year...
