10/28/2004 Archived Entry: "Now That It Is Over, Baseball Coverage on Fox Stinks"
The Fox coverage of the World Series was atrocious.
Witness:
- McCarver thinks we are baseball stupid and he is baseball smart. I think the game has passed him by.
- Joe Buck is not a passable imitation of his father. Slam-A-Lama-Ding-Dong indeed.
- We want to see the game. We want to see if the infield is playing in. We want to see if they are shading a hitter to the opposite field. We want to see the catcher and the third base coach giving signs. We get to see idiots in bird hats and body paint. And women crossing their fingers.
- Al Leiter was the only one in the booth for the ALCS from whom we could learn anything. He was dumped from the World Series. Tim, are you threatened by someone who actually knows and plays the game today?
- We want to see meaningful statistics. We got trivial pursuit.
- And the worst offense: they actually interviewed, in game three, the fake star of a series of beer commercials as if he were a real player. I mean, there were some real players in the stands. Why not interview them?
I suppose the list could be longer. Anyone want to add to it?

--- Too many head shots of whichever pitcher was on the mound at any given time. This was a close second to the ceaseless "fan cam" coverage.
--- Lyons's use of the phrase "dead red": twice per inning by my unscientific count.
--- The "team of destiny" theme, which Fox has turned into an annoying art form.
