Do you think of yourself as a saint? If you are a Christian, you are one. You don't have to be made one by the pope or anyone else.
You don't have to be perfect to be a saint. Paul often calls the receivers of his letters saints. Then he goes on to point out several areas in which they could improve. We have lots of room for improvement ourselves, don't we? Yet we are saints.
A saint is someone who has been made holy--sanctified--by God's grace, which is really God working in your life. Try as hard as you want, and you can't make yourself a saint. But God can do it easily. He loves you and you are his child. He wants you to be holy as he is holy. You really need him to take care of that. You've probably tried to do it yourself before, and you have undoubtedly failed. Holiness is a God thing.
Have you sung the worship chorus? "Holiness, holiness is what I long for. Holiness is what I need. Holiness, holiness is what want from me. So take my heart and form it. Take my mind and transform it. Take my will and conform it to yours, to yours, oh Lord." Folks, it is as simple as that. That is the prayer that asks God to make you holy. And he will not fail to act on that prayer when you really pray it. You are, at that point, a saint.
Now, if I were you I wouldn't go around calling myself a saint, as in "Saint Randy". Especially this is the case if your name happens to be Mary or Nicholas. But it just might help you see yourself through God's eyes if you think of yourself as a saint.
Because that's what you are.
