Not an Encyclopedia

… by and large, the Bible was written to confront us rather than to inform us. It’s a proclamation, not an encyclopaedia.

via Confessing Evangelical » Inerrancy as a “category error”

A hearty “amen” and “right on” to my BHT brother, John H, as he riffs on the post of another brother, Blue Raja.

I’ve been reading a festschrift to Clark Pinnock. Some of the chapters are open to being open, but some of the chapters are closed, closed, closed, though in an open and engaging manner. The characteristic that shrouds the closed authors is the use of the Bible in such a way that 1. a huge comprehensive system of theology must be teased out of the Bible and 2. it must be compatible with Greek philosophy.

But, as Mr. H points out, the Bible isn’t an encyclopedia.

    Thanks, Randy.

You may be able to hazard a guess as to how the word “encyclop(a)edia” popped into my head… ;-)
